Leadership in School

I was the department chair for the music department for 2 years, grades 7-12 in two different buildings.  I was an experience.  I chose to resign as the chair after the birth of my daughter so that I could spend more time at home but also because it was apparent that the position was designed to fail, and although my best efforts were focused on changing the position, the administration refused to follow through.

More recently, I have tried to introduce new technologies to other teachers and to help influence the tech department to consider opening up Twitter to our district.  Although there is no plan at this time, I am slowly demonstrating how this can be used in classrooms and show that it is possible to develop a plan for inappropriate behavior on the school network.

Other music teachers in my department are open to my ideas and welcome any ideas that help make their job more efficient or that will be interesting to introduce to their own students.

  1. Josh - You've had alot of experience as being a leader! I think it's great that you continue to introduce new technologies to your students and staff. Although you don't have the official title, you show the qualities of a technology leader in your school. Keep up the great work!

  2. Josh - I completely understand about giving up some responsibilites when the first baby arrives. It's too important to miss! It's too bad that you felt your department chair was doomed to fail because of low support from administration. It's always frustrating when that is the case. I am glad you have been able to influence your colleagues with technology. Good luck with the Twitter endeavor!

  3. That's totally understandable. Stress as a leader (or even as a teacher) can take it's toll on a person. And they're only young once and grow up fast. It sounds like a cliche, but is soo true.

Slowly introducing things is a great way. I think we all know what it's like to have something rammed down our throats. Win them over and it'll go sooo much easier.

  4. Josh,
I bet going between two different buildings was a bit of a challenge too. If the position is supported, especially by administration, then it would be hard to see it take off and work wonders. And way to go at working at getting your district to open Twitter and showing the other teachers how to use it. Even if one teacher thinks it is "Cool!" they can always back you up and get others involved with it too.
